Independent Living for the Visually Impaired

LookTel, a smartphone app for the visually impaired, created by IPPLEX/iVisit, LLC has been chosen by International CTIA Wireless 2010 as one of the finalist for the E-tech Awards for Healthcare/Public Safety/Transportation Public Services category. The LookTel app provides verbal identification of common household objects, currency denominations and will read text for users.

IPPLEX is a well known research and development company headquartered in Santa Monica focused on cross-platform audio/video communication, mobile health services, machine recognition, and augmented reality solutions. Orang Dialmeh, IPPLEX Founder, CEO teamed up with Tim Dorcey, iVisit’s creator for the purpose of developing mobile solutions for physician/patient care, independent living solutions and a myriad of solutions for creating quality of life for impaired, challenged and persons with disability.

According to IPPEX, the emerging fixed and and devices enabled combined presence, text, voice, video and other forms of data communications between multiple parties in real-time or asynchronously. The iVisit platform is currently used as a means to provide remote treatment and monitoring for patients in assistant living situations or for treating patients in home settings. The emphasis is on creating a medical service delivery service which allows the patient to live independently while at the same time providing quality/cost effective treatment.

The LookTel software will be demonstrated at the 25th Annual International Technology & Persons With Disabilities Conference in San Diego on March 23-27, 2010 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Here is a sneak preview of LookTel in action:

The LookTel Smartphone application automatically scans the room environment and recognizes common household items, money denominations and other useful information for the visually impaired person. In addition, LookTel software includes an optical character recognition, (OCR) text reader. The OCR reads text and articles and allows users to hear the content via their Smartphone. According to LookTel, the software is compatible with Windows Mobile platforms, HTC Touch Pro2 and netbook readers.

The cost and distribution date for LookTel has not been released by the company.
