Pelješac Bridge boosting regional development

March 8th, 2022

The Pelješac Bridge in Dubrovnik-Neretva County will be open to traffic from June 2022. It will connect two areas of Dubrovnik-Neretva County and also Croatia.

The bridge is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the history of Croatia, and traffic will no longer have to cross the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The bridge, which is 2.4 km long and 55 meters high, is the best solution for connecting the south of Croatia with the rest of the country, and also with the European Union. This will have multiple impacts on the Croatian economy. [image1]

First of all because the Pelješac peninsula will become more accessible from the Croatian mainland and, thanks to better roads, it will have a great impact on local  tourism, agriculture, mariculture and on the economy as a whole.

The construction of two-way access roads is planned, and the opportunity to bypass around Ston will facilitate access to the bridge. It will also be much easier to reach the islands of Korčula and Mljet, and many parts of the Region will become better connected because no one will need to cross the Bosnia and Herzegovina state border in Neum anymore.

The Covid pandemic has taught us that destinations can remain popular if tourists can drive to them. In this respect, the bridge allows them to enjoy the Croatian coast and to drive to Dubrovnik.

In June this year, the first vehicles will pass over the bridge, when the project will be completed, and locals from the Dubrovnik area are looking forward to this. [image2]

The project has cost €550m, with €357m from the European Union. Dubrovnik-Neretva County is looking forward to the inauguration of the Pelješac Bridge in June, since the Region and the Counry will be united for the first time, with a great opportunity for development for the entire region.
