IU Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Professor Doug Edmonds and his team of students are leading cutting-edge research on how floodwaters reshape Indiana's landscapes. With the help of drones equipped with LiDAR and a network of water-depth sensors scattered across the floodplain, they're tracking how topsoil shifts during major flood events.

Why does this matter? Because topsoil is one of Indiana's most vital natural resources—and understanding how it moves could be the key to preserving it for future generations.

This is hands-on science in action: fieldwork, remote sensing, and high-tech tools coming together to answer real-world environmental questions.
