Transparent High Frequency Device

The Optronic Materials Center (Managing Director: Naoki Ohashi) and Sensor Materials Center (Managing Director: Hajime Haneda) of the National Institute for Materials Science (President: Sukekatsu Ushioda), and Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. jointly developed a hybrid structure comprising fine metallic wiring and a transparent oxide conductor, which is the basic technology for transparent high frequency devices.
This technology combines metal, which displays high conductivity but is not transparent, and a transparent oxide conductor, which is transparent but has 100 times higher resistivity than metal. By utilizing the complementary features of these two materials, NIMS realized a device structure which is invisible for naked human eyes, and at the same time, displays high transmission characteristics for the high frequency current in gigahertz range to be used in wireless digital communication technologies, beginning with cell phones.
