At Science X, we use AI tools to support our editorial work and offer features that help readers explore our reporting. This page explains how we use these tools, their limitations, and the editorial standards that guide their use.

Responsible AI

We use AI to support our editorial team with tasks such as processing source materials, preparing initial drafts, improving clarity, and organizing information. These tools assist our work; they do not replace editorial judgment.

AI can produce errors or miss important scientific context. Every article, including those prepared with AI assistance, is independently reviewed by at least two editors before publication. This review includes checking the scientific content against the source material and related research, ensuring headline accuracy, and editing for clarity and context, in line with our editorial standards and editorial process.

Science X retains editorial responsibility for the content it publishes, including material prepared with AI assistance. Our approach reflects the human review and editorial responsibility safeguards recognized in Article 50(4) of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act.

Our commitment to accuracy, integrity, and clear science reporting applies regardless of which tools help prepare a story.

Article summaries ("The GIST")

"The GIST" (Get Instant Summarized Text) uses AI to create concise summaries of our articles, giving readers a quick overview of the main points.

These summaries supplement the original reporting. They may omit details, simplify findings, or miss important context. Readers should consult the full article for a more complete understanding of the research, including its limitations and qualifications.

AI-generated images

Science X may occasionally use AI-generated images to illustrate articles. AI-generated images are identified as such in their captions.

These images are intended for illustration. They should not be interpreted as photographs, scientific evidence, or accurate depictions of the people, places, objects, or events discussed in an article.

AI-generated images can contain inaccuracies, including details that appear plausible but do not reflect the underlying research. Readers should refer to the article and its sources for factual information.

Reporting concerns

If you notice an error or misleading detail in an article, an AI-generated summary, or an image, please let our editors know using the "Feedback to editors" button at the end of the article.
