Why We Occasionally Ask for a Quick Verification
Every day, our site receives millions of automated requests consuming terabytes of bandwidth — most of them from content scrapers that provide no value to real users. To keep the site fast and reliable, we sometimes show a quick security check.
Over the past few years, the nature of web traffic has changed dramatically. The majority of traffic hitting many websites today is no longer human — it is automated. Unfortunately, these are not helpful bots (like search engine crawlers), but large-scale content scrapers that copy data and consume resources without providing value to our users.
Modern scrapers are very hard to detect
Today’s bots are designed to look like real people. Modern scrapers:
- Closely mimic real user behavior
- Use large IP farms and rotating proxies
- Load pages the same way a browser does
Because of this, traditional bot detection techniques (like basic rate limits or simple bot filters) can’t reliably distinguish between humans and automation.
Why this matters
Even though you never see these bots, they have a real impact:
- They slow down the site
- Increase bandwidth and server load
- Reduce resources available for real users
Without protection, the cost of running the service would increase dramatically — and directly impact our ability to keep it running and responsive for real users.
Our approach: show challenges only when needed
We use Turnstile (by Cloudflare) selectively, not for everyone.
- Less than 10% of legitimate users ever see a challenge
- The system is primarily triggered by traffic that looks suspicious
- It effectively blocks the vast majority of automated abuse
This allows most visitors to browse normally without interruption while still protecting the platform. So if you do see it, it’s because the system just wants to quickly confirm you’re human.
We don’t love it either — but we need it
We understand that any extra step can feel inconvenient. However, without this protection our operational costs would skyrocket, which would directly affect the stability and availability of the site.
This is not something we added lightly — it’s a measure we were forced to adopt to keep the service sustainable.
It should be seamless for real users
If you are using a modern, up-to-date browser, the check:
- Usually happens automatically
- Takes only a moment
- Requires no interaction in most cases
Your privacy is not affected
Turnstile is not used for tracking or profiling you. It simply verifies that:
- A real browser
- Controlled by a human
- Is making the request
It does not collect personal data or allow us to identify you.
Thank you for your understanding
These protections help ensure that real people — not automated scrapers — get fast, reliable access to the site.
We truly appreciate your patience and support as we work to keep the service sustainable and available to everyone.
