USF Researchers Measure Beach Loss

The University of South Florida researchers issued a report Wednesday that shows a significant loss in beach sand in Pinellas County due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Ping Wang, USF associate professor of geology, and graduate student Tiffany Roberts surveyed three areas along Pinellas beaches two weeks before the tropical storm and a week after. The areas of study included Long Key, which includes Pass-a-Grille; Treasure Island; and Sand Key.

More than 630,000 cubic yards of sand was lost from the three areas surveyed, the report concluded. Much of sand ended up in sand bars close to shore.

Pinellas County officials expect it will cost $25 million to renourish the beach areas impacted by Debby.
