JoVE establishes Librarian Advisory Board

On Thursday, August 16, 2012, Journal of Visualized Experiments, JoVE was honored to welcome to its first annual Library Board meeting:

T. Scott Plutchak, Director, Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Mark Funk, Associate Director, Resources Management, Weill Cornell Medical Library

Anneliese Taylor, Head, Collection Management, Library & CKM, University of California, San Francisco

Michael Newman, Head, Librarian and Bibliographer, Falconer Biology Library, Stanford University

Susan Swogger, Collections Development Librarian, Health Sciences Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Beth Ketterman, MLS, Assistant Director for Collection, Laupus Health Sciences Library, East Carolina University

The six members were selected for their continued achievements in a rapidly evolving profession, for their principled and constant stand on the distribution and delivery of rich media, and their leadership within the community.

The formation of the JoVE Library Advisory Board was aimed at focusing on strengthening relationships within the academic and hospital library community, advising on strategies for the development of the JoVE platform and its subscription model, and to nurture a deeper perspective on the changing roles of medical librarianship.

During the meeting JoVE representatives spent some time presenting an overview of the company; the business issues affecting it, and its production model that proposes to increase scientific research through the visualization, in high quality video format, of experimental procedures and protocols. Thus allowing scientists greater ease in reproducing lab experiments.

Over the course of the day, the six librarian board members were able to help shape and bring some perspective to many areas of the JoVE platform and distribution model that have recently been under the microscope. These topics included; section indexing with PubMed, COUNTER compliance, recommendation features, and Open Access.

Overall, the vigor and energy that was brought to the meeting helped establish the event as a valuable process in the development of JoVE and we look forward to continuing the partnership in the coming weeks, months, and years.
