Optics and photonics technology leaders, researchers and companies to convene at FiO 2012
Innovations from nearly 900 scientific, technical and educational presentations will be highlighted during the Optical Society's (OSA) 96th Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO) 2012, being held Oct. 14 - 18 in Rochester, N.Y. Co-located with Laser Science XXVIII, the annual meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) Division of Laser Science (DLS), the meeting will cover the breadth of optical science and engineering in five days of cutting-edge content, as well as provide opportunities for networking and scientific exchange. Exhibits featuring leading optics companies will complement the in-depth educational programming and offer attendees a glimpse of the latest optics and photonics technologies and products.

In August, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences released its much-awaited draft report advocating for optics and photonics as an enabling technology, including extensive discussion on the economic impact of optics. This Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) presentation discusses the report with respect to the current global optics marketplace, and the key opportunities highlighted in the study.
Executive Speaker Series and Reception: Interview with Michael J. Cumbo, Ph.D., President, IDEX Optics & Photonics

New this year, FiO will host OSA's Executive Speaker Series, an ongoing, interactive forum offering informal conversation with industry luminaries. This series features top leaders in the optics and photonics field sharing their personal viewpoints in a wide spectrum of topics including career paths, corporate observations and personal perspectives. This session will feature Michael J. Cumbo, president of IDEX Optics & Photonics .

University of Rochester Professor Emil Wolf has had a tremendous impact across all of optics. In honor of his 90th birthday, FiO will feature speakers from academia and government labs on the future of four areas where Wolf has made special impact: inverse problems, coherence and quantum optics, physical optics, and optics at the University of Rochester.
Understanding the Developing and Aging Visual Systems

As life expectancy continues to rise, there is an increasing desire to better understand age-related changes in the visual system. Speakers from leading colleges of optometry from around the world will first explore developmental changes in the eye's optics and in the visual system that occur early in life. In the second half of the symposium, speakers will shed light on current understandings of alterations in the eye's optical quality, retinal characteristics and visual performance during the course of normal aging.
Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplification

Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification is an alternative light amplification technique to lasers. It provides various advantages such as broader bandwidth, higher gain, wavelength tunability, and higher intensity contrast, which motivate its utilization in small-scale high-repetition-rate as well as large-scale high-energy laser systems. Speakers at leading research institutions from seven countries will provide an overview of the state-of-art of this unique technology, its various application areas, and its future development directions.

The FiO 2012 Technical Program Committee accepts a limited number of post-deadline papers for presentation. The purpose of post-deadline sessions is to give attendees the opportunity to hear the newest breakthroughs in rapidly advancing areas. Only those papers judged to be truly excellent and compelling in their timeliness were accepted.

In August, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on Harnessing Light released a landmark report, Optics and Photonics: Essential Technologies for Our Nation, discussing the current state of optical sciences and goals for the future. Please join the OSA Public Policy Committee for a town hall discussion with representatives from the Harnessing Light committee, NAS, and the National Science Foundation to hear first-hand the need for the report, the findings, as well as current and future global innovations and technological opportunities enabled by optical science.
