Pediatricians support the AAP 'Community Cares' project in New Orleans charter schools

October 19th, 2012

Pediatricians gathering in New Orleans this weekend for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics will spend a day fixing up charter schools as part of the third annual AAP "Community Cares" project.

Pediatricians attending the AAP National Conference & Exhibition, their families and children will spend Friday, Oct. 19 working to support the ReNEW Charter Management Organization, a network of charter schools dedicated to preparing inner-city children for college. Volunteers will help with a variety of activities, including painting, repairing, gardening, filing, and assisting teachers and students at ReNEW schools from 11:45 a.m to 4 p.m.

Founded in 2010, the ReNEW Charter Management Organization provides a competitive college-preparatory curriculum to low-income, underserved children pre-kindergarten through high school. The organization includes three grade schools: Batiste Cultural Arts Academy, SciTech Academy and Little Woods Elementary; and one high school: New Orleans Accelerated High School, all located in the Irish Channel district of New Orleans.

Volunteers will be working at SciTech Academy, 820 Jackson Ave, and the Batiste Cultural Arts Academy, 3128 Constance Street. Media are encouraged to attend, but no pictures or video of students are allowed unless the school can verify the student(s) have parental media release forms on file.

By providing a structured and well-disciplined program, the mission of the ReNEW program is to prepare students for college – and to encourage them to believe that college is an attainable goal. Collegiate banners, pennants and signs decorate the halls, and each classroom is decorated to reflect the teacher's alma mater. This spring, ReNEW had its first 16 students graduate from high school.
