Inaugural issue of Big Data journal launched at Strata Conference, Santa Clara, CA

February 13th, 2013

Big Data, the new groundbreaking, open access, peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers, will launch its inaugural issue at the Strata conference in Santa Clara, CA, February 26-28, 2013. Spearheaded by Editor-in-Chief, Edd Dumbill, principal analyst for O'Reilly Radar, and program chair for the O'Reilly Strata conference, the Journal will address the complicated questions surrounding the powerful and growing field of data discovery and provide the necessary focus to bring together data-driven research and experience in big data from a broad array of disciplines, whether technical, social, or industrial. The issue is available free on the Big Data website.

The inaugural issue includes premium content from leading experts in the field, including a regularly featured column "Broad Data," from the Tetherless World Senior Constellation Professor, Jim Hendler, a meeting report contributed by the Director of Data Science at LinkedIn, Daniel Tunkelang, "Symposium on Human-Computer Information Retrieval," as well as an opinion piece on "Big Data and Development" by Robert Kirkpatrick, Director of U.N. Global Pulse. The issue also presents provocative interviews with Jim Adler, Chief Privacy Officer and General Manager of Data Systems at Intelius, about big data and thought crime, and Rick Smolan, CEO, Against All Odds Productions, on his new and innovative book The Human Face of Big Data. Other contributions include an original article by Foster Provost, Professor, Dept. of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, NYU Stern, and Thomas Fawcett, Proofpoint, Inc. on "Data Science and its Relationship to Big Data and Data-driven Decision Making," and Chaitanya Baru et al. on "Benchmarking Big Data Systems and the Big Data Top 100 List."

"The field of big data touches many disciplines, and bridges research and industry," says Editor-in-Chief, Edd Dumbill. "The Journal provides an integrative approach, enabling much needed dialogue. Many big data issues, such as privacy, have implications from low-level database design through to public policy."

By providing a unique forum for the vast dissemination of world-class data science research that addresses the challenges and opportunities in big data, the Journal will bring the field of big data and the skills of the data scientist to a new level of excellence. To ensure the broadest and most timely dissemination of research and experience, Big Data will publish under the Creative Commons Attribution license ("CC-BY").
