World Experts to Gather in D.C. May 20-21 to Review Critical Concerns for National Power Grid Resilience

Washington, D.C. – On May 20-21, international experts from government and the power industry will gather on Capitol Hill to discuss address acute but little known hazards to the U.S. power grids. Scientists have determined that century-class severe solar flares could damage or shut down U.S. power grids, creating an unprecedented crisis for our electricity-dependent society. At the same time, recent threats of nuclear attack by North Korea have highlighted our power grid's vulnerability to the kind of nuclear EMP attack that Congressional commissions and U.S. government agencies have been warning about since 2004.

Given our current lack of preparedness, large portions of the U.S. could be without power for months or years. Without power, we would be without pumped water, and the food distribution system would quickly break down. The impact on U.S. society could be catastrophic.
