Hundreds of insect scientists migrating to Rapid City this week
Nearly 300 entomologists will meet June 16-19, 2013 at the Best Western Ramkota Rapid City Hotel & Conference Center in Rapid City, South Dakota as the Entomological Society of America's North Central Branch holds its 68th Annual Meeting.
Topics of discusssion will include:
- Forests pests, such as the mountain pine beetle and the emerald ash borer
- Agricultural insect pests such as the western corn rootworm, the soybean aphid, and the twospotted spider mites
- Urban insect pests, such as bed bugs and termites
- Insect pollinators, such as honey bees
- Biological control (using insects to manage other insects) with lady beetles, parasitic wasps, and other insects
- Genetically-modified, insect-resistant crops such as corn and soybeans
- Medically important insects such as ticks and mosquitoes
- Integrated Pest Management
- Insect Behavior
In addition, the meeting will feature the Linnaean Games, where university student teams compete against each other in a test of insect knowledge, plus an Insect Photo Salon, a Career Center, an Awards Ceremony, student competitions, and social events.
