49th ICAAC press kit now available online

September 9th, 2009

This weekend through next week, San Francisco's Moscone Center will play host to one of the world's premier infectious diseases meetings, the 49th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC). From September 12-15, nearly 8,000 scientists are expected to attend, with a total attendance of 11,000 people. ICAAC has traditionally been an outlet for the latest news on emerging trends in disease and new drugs.

Among the announcements expected next week:

  • The latest research on influenza and new influenza drugs including the ability of a cocktail of the three current influenza drugs to overcome drug resistant viruses.
  • A compound commonly found in over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays has antiviral effects against rhinovirus and could help prevent transmission of the common cold.
  • MRSA isolated from water and sand samples at public beaches in Washington state.
  • Phase III clinical trials of a new antibiotic to treat travelers' diarrhea.
  • Emerging diseases including a new malaria parasite.
