Cleveland Clinic's 2013 Obesity Summit explores causes, prevention and treatment of obesity

September 25th, 2013

Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic's 8th Annual Obesity Summit will bring together a diverse mix of healthcare practitioners Oct. 16 and 17, 2013, at the InterContinental Hotel and Bank of America Conference Center in Cleveland to examine the key issues surrounding the escalating obesity epidemic in the United States.

An estimated one in every three adults and one in every six children are obese. In addition to causing health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, obesity costs the American healthcare system around $147 billion per year.

"The summit was designed for healthcare practitioners who focus on obesity-related fields and who want to tackle the key issues surrounding obesity," said Philip Schauer, M.D., Director of the Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute and of the Obesity Summit. "Participants will discuss approaches to help solve this epidemic, such as newly approved drugs and surgical techniques to treat obesity, as well as how to change the human behaviors that contribute to it."

Highlights of the summit this year include interactive workshops, a meet-the-professor luncheon, a focus on obesity in young women, and a presentation of the Look AHEAD study that shows the impact of diet and exercise on obesity.

The summit is comprised of six sessions.

  • Session 1: The Science of Obesity – What is the latest research regarding the causes of obesity, including the role of gut microbiata and circadian rhythm?
  • Session 2: Medical and Surgical Management – How effective are the new drugs to treat obesity? What are the pros and cons of current bariatric surgical procedures? What population of diabetic patients can benefit from bariatric surgery?
  • Session 3: Lifestyle – What is the role of various diet plans? What lifestyle factors can maximize weight loss strategies?
  • Session 4: Obesity and Early Development – What are the strategies for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity?
  • Session 5: Workshop sessions will review in more practical details some of the topics explored during the summit, including childhood obesity and weight management during pregnancy.
  • Session 6: A panel discussion will review clinical case studies.

The Obesity Summit agenda includes 13 nationally and internationally renowned experts and more than 15 top Cleveland Clinic physicians who will participate in the discussions.
