15th International Conference on Intracranial Pressure & Brain Monitering

November 6th, 2013

The National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and SingHealth Academy (SHA) will be hosting the 15th International Conference on Intracranial Pressure and Brain Monitoring (ICP) for a period of 5 days, from 6 – 10 November, at The Academia, within Singapore General Hospital.

The first ICP conference was held in Germany, at Hannover Medical School, in 1972. Now slightly more than 40 years old, the conference is still going strong. ICP is an essential, international platform for new ideas and approaches in the complex field of intracranial pressure to be shared. The conference has travelled within Europe, Asia and North America.

Intracranial pressure is one of the most important parameters, which shine light on the activity inside an injured brain. It is imperative to consider intracranial pressure when treating patients either acutely injured by trauma, haemorrhage, or stroke or those affected by hydrocephalus or idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

"We are honoured to hold the 15th ICP conference here in Singapore. It is truly an open space for the exchange of ideas and research amongst clinicians and researchers alike. The young receive feedback from the seasoned; the seasoned impart their hard earned knowledge freely. After all, the reason for any work in medicine is always the patient," said Associate Professor Ivan Ng, Chairperson of ICP 2013, and Senior Consultant with the Department of Neurosurgery at the National Neuroscience Institute.

This year, there have been more than 140 scientific abstracts submitted, all centred upon the treatment of patients who have a brain condition requiring the regular monitoring of intracranial pressure. Areas of interest include the biophysics of ICP and brain deformation, experimental aspects of raised ICP, even hydrocephalus shunt technology.

"As an attendee of the ICP conferences in the past, I always left refreshed, with new ideas and concepts to think about. ICP opens your mind to what others have been practising; also allowing you the opportunity to share your team's discoveries," shared Associate Professor Christopher Ang Beng Ti, Co-Course Chairman, and Senior Consultant with the Department of Neurosurgery at the National Neuroscience Institute.

The National Neuroscience Institute and SingHealth Academy are proud to host the 15th International Conference on Intracranial Pressure and Brain Monitoring, which has had a deep, illustrious history, and will be planting its roots in Singapore in November.
