Learning more about multilingualism

LMU's Institute of German as a Foreign Language has set up an International Research Unit for Multilingualism (IFM). The IFM's objectives can be briefly summarized as research, application and communication, says Professor Claudia Maria Riehl, the Head of the Institute.

The IFM brings together various lines of research relevant to the acquisition of multilingualism and its significance in a globalized world, and sees itself as a destination for researchers from Germany and abroad who are working in fields related to multilingualism und multiculturalism. The IFM will also offer a visiting professorship, as well as fellowships for junior researchers.

An international network will be built up and a database containing the latest information on research into multilingualism will be constructed. The Unit will also develop new training programs and course materials to facilitate the acquisition of German as a foreign/second language.

"The IFM will provide a direct link between the University and the public. This is where its potential for innovation lies," says Claudia Maria Riehl. The Unit plans to offer counseling sessions and training courses on topics such as language learning and intercultural competence for nursery schools and businesses.
