Grand challenge: Top cause of disability years worldwide
What:
More than 200 experts from 31 countries are meeting this week to grapple with the leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide* – mental disorders. "Solving the Grand Challenges in Global Mental: Partnerships for Research & Practice," is being convened by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), part of the National Institutes of Health, and Grand Challenges Canada.
"Mental health is moving front-and-center on the global stage in the coming months," said NIMH's Dr. Pamela Collins. "It's on the agenda for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in August and mental health advocates are working hard to see mental health included in the post-2015 development agenda Countries are already working to meet targets set by the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020. Innovations in global mental health services research are particularly timely."
Among presenters at the meeting is Dr. Shekhar Saxena, the director of mental health and substance abuse for the World Health Organization (WHO).
