Improving the Sleep Cycle

October 12th, 2009

(PhysOrg.com) -- Dr. Richard R. Bootzin, a nationally known sleep expert, will talk about about research related to treatment of sleep disorders and practical ways people can improve their sleeping patterns.

World renowed sleep researcher Dr. Richard R. Bootzin will be speaking about ways that appropriate sleep can improve the life cycle.

Bootzin, a University of Arizona psychology and psychiatry professor, will present his lecture, "Sleep Sense and Nonsense: Improving Sleep through the Life Cycle," as part of the fall 2009 Well University Partnership lecture series.

The Oct. 13 event will be held at noon in the Gallagher Theater, which is located in the Student Union Memorial Center.

A leading researcher in the field of sleep, Bootzin has made major contributions to the understanding and treatment of sleep disorders.

He is considered a pioneer of behavioral treatments of insomnia and directs the Insomniac Clinic at University Medical Center, and also directs the Sleep Research Lab, which is part of the University's psychology department.

In his lecture, Bootzin will discuss sleep throughout the life span, including its variance in infants, teens, college students, adults and the elderly, with an emphasis on the consequences of sleep deprivation and insomnia.

Bootzin, who has been investigating behavioral approaches to insomnia since 1970, will also present techniques and behaviors that can improve sleep, which have been validated by scientific research.

He has developed stimulus control instructions for insomnia, which remains one of the most effective single treatments for insomnia. He also has earned the highest standard-of-practice rating from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and last year received the 2008 Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award from the Sleep Research Society.

Educated at the University of Wisconsin and Purdue University, Bootzin has since written more than 150 articles on sleep and sleep disorders. Among the books he has authored are "Psychology Today: An Introduction" and "Abnormal Psychology: Current Perspectives," both textbooks in his field. Bootzin joined the UA faculty in 1987.

The Well University Partnership, or Well U, brings together campus resources that promote all aspects of health and wellness. Well U actively recruits UA organizations, departments and wellness-related programs to become Well U partners in order to extend support to all UA campus constituents: students, faculty, employees, retirees and alumni.
