University Hospitals Neurological Institute earns Gold Center of Excellence designation

The Neurological Institute (NI) at University Hospitals (UH) has been designated as a Gold Center of Excellence (COE) and featured as a top performing center by NeuStrategy, Inc., a Chicago consulting firm providing strategic support to neuroscience, oncology and orthopaedic service providers.

NeuStrategy's COE Survey is the only one of its kind in the neurosciences field and is the industry standard for evaluating program infrastructure.

Only 40 percent of programs received sufficient scores to be recognized as a COE. A hospital's overall performance is determined by measuring program progress in four key areas: Clinical and Research Programs, Staff, Facilities & Technology, and Business.

UH was noted for its innovative, integrated and individualized care model which puts patient care at the forefront of everything the NI does, according to Warren Selman, MD, Director of the UH Neurological Institute. He also credited the NI's leadership council for changing the way the NI interacted with the community. "Their talents – and in some cases their financial commitment – have supported everything from leadership succession planning to developing outreach programs, including the Institute's Parkinson's Boot Camp, an annual patient and family conference that now draws nearly 1,000 patients and their caregivers," he said.

"The survey findings underscore the importance of UH's multi-specialty approach to care. In addition to offering the most comprehensive range of neurological specialists, UH has state-of-the-art neuro-imaging technology, and as a result, UH offers a comprehensive range of neurological specialists and patient services in 15 centers of expertise in such areas as stroke and cerebrovascular disease, brain tumors and neuro-oncology, functional and restorative neurosurgery, and brain health," said Dr. Selman.
