OU engineering professors among nation's best 'Young Investigators'

Two University of Oklahoma College of Engineering professors in the Advanced Radar Research Center are recipients of the prestigous Young Investigator award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Hjalti Sigmarsson, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the Air Force Young Investigator Research Program Award, for his research on new, innovative, electronically-tunable substrate materials to improve future generations of communications and radar systems. Sigmarsson submitted one of 57 winning research proposals and was awarded a grant in the amount of #360,000 for a three-year period.

Jessica Ruyle, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the Young Investigator Award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and a $500,000 grant to improve military communications by designing and developing a thin, flat antenna that conforms easily when placed on anything from vehicles to uniforms. Ruyle's innovative new antenna design will allow communications systems to operate uninterrupted in the field.
