Biological effects of mobile phone and wireless radiation

United States epidemiologist and toxicologist Dr Devra Davis is in Melbourne to share her knowledge on the biological impacts of mobile phones.

Dr Davis, an internationally recognised expert on electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and other wireless transmitting devices, believes that Australia is falling behind in addressing the significant issues associated with safe mobile phone use.

"In the past Australia has led the world in safety standards in areas such as seat belts, gun control laws and plain packaging of cigarettes. But on the issue of potential dangers of mobile phones, Australians are being let down by their various governments," she said.

As well as being an award-winning scientist, acclaimed speaker and bestselling author, Dr Davis is the Founding Director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute - the first institute of its kind in the world to examine the environmental factors that contribute to the majority of cases of cancer.

The University of Melbourne has recently made moves to increase research and teaching in the area of environmental dangers. Dr Anne Steinemann is a Professor of Civil Engineering, and the Chair of Sustainable Cities, from the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, Melbourne School of Engineering. She is a world expert on environmental pollutants, air quality, and health effects. Professor Steinemann is investigating how and why we're exposed to pollutants and ways to reduce risks and improve health.

In her address, Dr Davis will ask us to reconsider our relationship with this essential piece of technology and provide clear tips on the path to safer use.
