UChicago Medicine and Chicago Lakeshore Hospital to form psychiatry teaching affiliation

University of Chicago Medicine and Chicago Lakeshore Hospital are forming a new collaboration that advances psychiatric teaching programs and provides comprehensive clinical educational experience for UChicago Medicine residents and medical students, while simultaneously enhancing care for both organizations' patients.

The affiliation establishes a new adult inpatient psychiatric service for UChicago Medicine at Lakeshore, building on a longstanding partnership that includes existing teaching services in child and adolescent psychiatry and chemical dependence. Residents and students of the UChicago's Department of Psychiatry and Pritzker School of Medicine will hold clinical rotations at Lakeshore, under the supervision of UChicago Medicine faculty.

"The new expanded affiliation with Chicago Lakeshore Hospital will provide an outstanding learning environment for University of Chicago Medicine residents and Pritzker School of Medicine students," said Daniel Yohanna, MD, vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at UChicago Medicine. "They will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of patients from across Chicago at a major free-standing psychiatric hospital with a long-established record, and garner the experience they need to be fully prepared psychiatrists in our dynamic medical specialty."

Under the new partnership, UChicago Medicine patients transferred to Lakeshore who require inpatient psychiatric treatment will be treated on the new services under the care of UChicago faculty. These faculty will supervise rotating medical students and residents, who will be trained in advanced diagnostic methodology, evidence-based clinical treatment, and care of patients with complex clinical needs.
