Editor of Springer classic human genetics reference receives prize

Arno Motulsky, the senior editor of the 4th edition of Springer's classic reference and textbook Vogel and Motulsky's Human Genetics, was recently given the Victor A. McKusick Leadership Award. The prize, which recognizes Professor Motulsky's outstanding contributions to the field of human genetics, was presented to him at the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics on 24 October 2009 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Motulsky is Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Genome Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle. One of the founding giants of the field of human genetics, he is also a renowned researcher, teacher, mentor and clinician. Motulsky is considered a founder of the field of pharmacogenetics, performed the first bone marrow transplant in an animal model, and with Joseph Goldstein, investigated the genetic basis of hyperlipidemia in coronary heart disease. During his distinguished scientific career, he has authored over 400 articles, trained more than 70 postdoctoral fellows and won many awards and honors.

The award, named in 2009 for Dr. Victor A. McKusick for his inspiring contributions to the field, is presented to an individual whose achievements have fostered and enriched the development of various human genetics disciplines. Recipients exemplify the leadership and vision needed to ensure that the field of human genetics will flourish and successfully assimilate into the broader context of science, medicine and health. A plaque and $2,500 is presented to the awardee at the annual meeting.
