Global congress on bone, muscle and joint diseases opens in Malaga, Spain

April 14th, 2016

Musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis or sarcopenia are affecting an ever greater proportion of the world's population - with disability due to these conditions having increased by 45% from 1990 to 2010 alone. The focus of the world's leading medical and research congress in the musculoskeletal field, which opens today in Malaga, Spain, will be on new ways in which to prevent and manage these serous and disabling conditions.

The World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2016) is hosted by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO).

Professor Jean-Yves Reginster, ESCEO President and Congress Co-Chair, stated, "The WCO-IOF-ESCEO annual congress is the must-attend research and educational forum for the broad range of clinicians and researchers who are active in the bone, muscle and joint arena. This year we were especially pleased to receive more than 1150 abstracts - a record number which testifies to the Congress' status as the leading global venue for the presentation of clinical research findings. The quality of the abstracts was exceptionally high and delegates can look forward to hearing about some exciting new research findings."

The scientific programme covers a wide scope of important topics presented in: 10 plenary lectures by renowned speakers, 51 oral communications selected from outstanding abstracts, and 20 oral presentations of selected posters. Specific topics will be addressed in 15 different Meet-The-Expert sessions and nine special sessions and symposia on issues of clinical importance. In addition to scheduled poster sessions, there will be six industry sponsored satellite symposia and 16 non-sponsored topical symposia that cover a broad range of 'hot' topics and clinically-relevant advances.

IOF President and Congress Co-Chair, Professor John A. Kanis said, "We look forward to an exciting programme which will present important new findings that will help advance our knowledge of musculoskeletal diseases. The multidisciplinary programme will help build bridges of knowledge between the various disciplines and between translational research and patient care."

The abstracts presented at WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2016 have been published in Volume 27/Suppl 1/ 2016 of the leading journal Osteoporosis International.
