IASLC launches global newsmagazine focused on advances in lung cancer

This month, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) launched a global newsmagazine, the IASLC Lung Cancer News, to disseminate the latest developments in prevention, treatment and care of patients with thoracic malignancies to academia, the oncology community and the general public.

"It is my privilege to introduce the IASLC Lung Cancer News (ILCN)," said Corey J. Langer, MD, FACP, Director of Thoracic Oncology and Professor of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Editor of the IASLC Lung Cancer News. "ILCN is structured to present the most recent and noteworthy lung cancer-related information worldwide, with the twin goals of facilitating professional development and improving patient care and research, and ultimately clinical outcome."

The ILCN highlights updates on research in thoracic malignancy, including diagnostics, screening, tobacco control, therapeutic interventions, quality of life, symptom management, and survivorship. The newsmagazine also acknowledges the complex interplay that exists between all stakeholders in the research and care of individuals with thoracic cancers. In so doing, it features expert commentary from thoracic oncology leaders, industry, and regulators.

Lung cancer continues to be a major global health problem with more than 1.6 million new patients diagnosed each year - more than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. A recent study found that up to 25 percent of patients with a lung cancer diagnosis did not see a cancer specialist, though many were treated with some form of cancer-directed therapy. The ILCN helps ensure that all lung cancer patients have access to up-to-date information about their diagnosis and treatment options.

"As an academic organization that includes thoracic oncology experts from all medical disciplines and all regions of the world, it is our obligation to connect with a broad audience so the cancer patients, their families, and their caregivers can learn and use the latest developments while benefiting from an expert's perspective," said Fred R. Hirsch, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and School of Medicine, and CEO of the IASLC.
