Nuclear experts to be able to practice abnormal situations on nuclear power unit

Special commission of OJSC Concern Rosenergoatom – a company, fulfilling functions of operator of all Russian nuclear stations, has given permission for conducting training of operating personnel on a simulator, worked out in MEPhI and installed in the personnel training center of the Rostov NPP.
Simulator, officially called PMT-3, was created at the MEPhI Automatics Department and is aimed at the operating personnel of block control board to acquire expertise, knowledge and skills, necessary for quality fulfillment of daily routine duties. The simulator includes a full-scale imitator of block and reserve control units, modelling computer complex and such an essential components of a modern nuclear object as communications, control and video surveillance systems. The simulator also has working stations for instructors.
In accordance with specific customer's requirements, MEPhI Automatics Department has worked out software, which in real time models physical processes, going on in technological systems of acting power units. In particular, PMT-3 fully simulates both the control unit of the Rostov NPP and real operations fulfilled by it. Moreover, the simulator can model neutron-physical and technological processes in the equipment of a nuclear power unit and perform all normal and abnormal operations including modes with equipment failures, design accidents and beyond design basis events.
As Rostov NPP specialists claim, the launching of the new simulator will allow them significantly raise the safety and the efficiency of exploitation of power units, and provide quality training and retraining of operating personnel for working at high technology equipment.
