BMJ signs pre-payment agreement with OpenAIRE

August 9th, 2016

BMJ, a leading healthcare knowledge provider, has signed a new pre-payment agreement with the European Commission's OpenAIRE2020 project to enable researchers funded by the Seventh Framework programme (FP7) to apply for Open Access publishing fees for eligible BMJ journals.

Thirteen fully Open Access journals published by BMJ, including the leading flagship journal The BMJ, BMJ Open, and BMJ Global Health, will be covered by this agreement. OpenAIRE and BMJ will collaborate to ensure that eligible manuscripts are identified as they are submitted to BMJ, clearing the way for their article publishing charges (APCs) to be paid at acceptance time.

A total of €4 million in funding for post-grant Open Access publishing costs is available via the 2-year European Commission (EC) FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot, which launched in 2015. During its first year of operation, the pilot has funded over 400 fully Open Access publications arising from more than 350 FP7 projects.

A significant number of applications received by the pilot requested funding for manuscripts accepted in Open Access journals published by BMJ - mainly BMJ Open and BMJ Global Health. This prompted OpenAIRE and BMJ to set up a pre-payment agreement.
