Elsevier announces the launch of Burns Open

February 28th, 2017

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, has announced the launch of Burns Open: An International Open Access Journal for Burn Injuries. Published on behalf of the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI), and a companion to Burns, this new international open access journal aims to foster the exchange of information on burn care among practitioners and others interested in the field. Burns Open is now accepting submissions and is scheduled to begin publication in February 2017.

"The quality of Burns continues to improve and the journal is now the leading source for communication related to burns," commented Steven E. Wolf, MD, Professor, Department of Surgery, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, and Editor-in-Chief of Burns. "As a side effect of this success, the number of high quality submissions to Burns has expanded to the point that we have exceeded the capacity to publish all papers of potential interest to the readers of Burns. Therefore, the leadership of ISBI has created a new journal, Burns Open, as an open access, peer-reviewed, online-only companion journal."

David Greenhalgh, MD, serves as Editor-in-Chief of Burns Open. Recognized as one of the foremost authorities in burn surgery and burn care, Dr. Greenhalgh was named Chief of Burns at Shriners Hospitals for Children—Northern California and Chief of the Burn Division, Department of Surgery, for the University of California, Davis School of Medicine in 1997. He is a past-president of the American Burn Association.

"Burns Open is a resource for all professions involved in the care, treatment, and prevention of burn injuries who seek to publish on topics in burn care and research. Our goal is to publish articles that focus on the epidemiology of burns and burn care, descriptions of techniques and innovations in care, and reports of potentially novel treatments and research advancements," said Dr. Greenhalgh. "Clinical and bench studies, case reports, and series are welcomed and encouraged."

The journal covers the incidence and epidemiology of burns, burn disasters, impact of burns on societies, investigation of underlying pathophysiology of injury, treatment of burn wounds and other skin conditions, scientific and clinical effects of smoke and cutaneous injury, rehabilitation and reconstruction, and effects of treatments on outcomes, scarring, and healing. In addition, the journal focuses on research related to nursing, occupational and physical therapy, aftercare/reintegration, and prevention.

As an open access journal, Burns Open is freely available to readers. Authors publishing in the journal benefit from a rapid review process and papers will appear online shortly after acceptance.

"We are pleased to publish Burns Open in partnership with ISBI. With its launch, our intentions are to better serve the authors and readers within this community and help support the society's goal to raise the level of education and care for thermally injured patients across the globe," added Allan Ross, Senior Publisher at Elsevier.
