BU researcher receives prestigious clinical psychology award

Denise Sloan, PhD, professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), has been named the 2017 recipient of the Toy Caldwell-Colbert Award for Distinguished Educator in Clinical Psychology from the Society of Clinical Psychology at the American Psychological Association.

The Toy Caldwell-Colbert Award recognizes those who have been outstanding in supporting, encouraging and promoting education and training, professional and personal development and career guidance to junior colleagues.

A BUSM faculty member since 2007, she also is the associate director of education in the Behavioral Science Division of the National Center for PTSD located at the VA Boston Healthcare System. Her work involves investigating more efficient treatment approaches for traumatic stress disorders with funding from the Department of Veteran Affairs, Department of Defense and the National Institute for Mental Health.

"This is the most important award I could receive because it means I've had a real impact on the trainees that I have mentored," Sloan said. "Knowing that multiple former trainees nominated me for this award is especially meaningful for me."

The award will be presented by the Society of Clinical Psychology at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Washington, D.C, in August.
