Superhero Science and Technology gets its own online open access journal

Delft researcher and editor-in-chief Barry Fitzgerald this week announced the start of the "Superhero Science and Technology" journal at the first international Secrets of Superhero Science symposium held at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft, The Netherlands). Fitzgerald is calling for papers that describe new and innovative research in science, technology, engineering and ethics while using superheroes, supervillains, superpowers, comic books or superhero/supervillain films as a link to the research.
Superhero Science
Thanks to modern scientific research and advanced technologies, we are closer than ever to creating the superpowers of superheroes, such as Wonder Woman, the X-Men, Spider-Man and Iron Man and the superpowers of supervillains such as Magneto and the Green Goblin. Several examples were given at the symposium: CRISPR/Cas and mutant superheroes like the X-Men, exoskeletons and Iron Man, nano-vision and Antman, and of course the ethics of Superhero Science.
Open Access Journal
The journal aims to give a further platform for research like this. At the same time Fitzgerald recognizes the potential for outreach of science and technology by combining it with a popular theme like superheroes. Open access therefore is a logical choice for this journal, which will be published on the TU Delft platform for Open Journal Systems. The first issue is planned for October.
Barry Fitzgerald
Barry Fitzgerald is author of the popular books "Secrets of Superhero Science" and "Secret Science of Santa Claus", in which he explains the real science behind some of the most famous superheroes, and how Santa Claus travels around the world on Christmas Eve respectively.
According to Fitzgerald – who, after watching the movie Superman as a child 'wanted superpowers and wanted them as soon as possible' - every superhero film provides a gateway into a world of superhero adventures as well as real and advanced science and technology. The "Secrets of Superhero Science" book, and now the scientific journal "Superhero Science and Technology", aim to capture both of these worlds.
