Symposium: 'Information Technology in Support of Materials Education,' March 20
Professor Keith Sheppard, Associate Dean of Engineering & Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, has announced the one-day symposium "Information Technology in Support of Materials Education," to be held in partnership with the British engineering software group Granta Design, featuring an array of international invited experts who will present on various aspects of the umbrella topic.
The symposium will take place at Stevens Institute of Technology, March 20, with optional short courses offered separately on March 18 and 19 (see below).
"This Materials Education Symposium will provide a great opportunity to hear innovative ideas for materials teaching, meet colleagues, and share ideas," said Sheppard. "It will look at the use of electronic resources in materials education (including, but not limited to, Granta's CES EduPack materials selection in design software), and how these approaches are being used at leading universities."
The event follows the model of a successful symposium at Cambridge University, UK, in April 2009, which attracted more than 80 attendees.
Symposium Speakers Include:
- Mike Ashby, University of Cambridge
- Keith Sheppard, Stevens Institute of Technology - Symposium host
- Trevor Harding, California Polytechnic State University
- Mark De Guire, Case Western Reserve University
- John Berry, Mississippi State University
- Richard Sisson, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
- Sylvain Turenne, École Polytechnique de Montréal
- Charles Hayes, Executive Director, ASM Materials Education Foundation

A Poster Session and social program will offer further opportunity to network with peers and share ideas.
Professor Mike Ashby will also be running a two-day course before the symposium for educators interested in learning more about CES EduPack and how it can be used to support materials teaching across the engineering curriculum and throughout all years of study. The course will pay particular attention to the use of materials and the environment. Course information may be obtained at http://www.grantadesign.com/symposium/us/courses.htm
