Carnegie Mellon to host crisis management workshop

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Silicon Valley will host a one-day workshop on Disaster Response and Emergency Services. The workshop will focus on the role of high-tech communication and other mobile technologies used by disaster responders.

"We plan to identify mutually beneficial research agendas and exchange information on state-of-the-art technologies now under way at our campus," said Martin Griss, director of Carnegie Mellon's Silicon Valley campus and co-director of the CyLab Mobility Research Center. The workshop also will address some of the challenges faced by disaster teams during the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.

Workshop participants will come from a broad spectrum of sectors, including government, industry and academia. Some of the program speakers will include: Matthew Bettenhausen, secretary of the California Emergency Management Agency; Bob Dolci, chief of security for NASA Ames and its Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART); and Carnegie Mellon researchers Pei Zhang and Aveek Purohit, who will unveil a new mobile sensor platform.
