Keynote speakers to explore challenges of green aerospace and effective climate monitoring
Reston, Va. - The aerospace industry's impact on energy use and Earth's environment; the challenges the United States faces in establishing an effective climate monitoring system; and the possible national security implications of climate change, will be among the subjects covered by keynote speakers at "Inside Aerospace: An International Forum for Aerospace Leaders On Energy and Environmental Challenges," May 11 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, Va.
Sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the two-day gathering will feature five keynote addresses by leading figures from government, industry, and academia, examining the issues, challenges, and possible solutions in each topic area.
The keynote speakers are as follows:
- Shere Abbott, associate director for energy and environment, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President, will discuss science and technology needs and opportunities for addressing climate change.
- Mary Glackin, deputy under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere, U.S. Department of Commerce, will discuss the role of aerospace technologies in monitoring global climate change, and the shortcomings of existing capabilities when faced with the requirements of new international monitoring requirements.
- Rear Adm. David Titley, the oceanographer/navigator of the U.S. Navy, will address climate change implications and operational monitoring requirements from national security and Navy perspectives.
- Alexis C. Livanos, corporate vice president and chief technology officer, Northrop Grumman Corp., will discuss the aerospace industry's perspective on the use of aerospace technology in the understanding and mitigation of climate change.
- Prof. Ian Poll, professor of aerospace engineering, Cranfield University, Cranfield, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom, will discuss the challenges facing global aviation due to current energy challenges and environmental impacts, and how advances in aerospace technology can provide solutions.
