NTU organizes international conference to chart R&D priorities for Singapore's maritime industry
An international conference organised by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) sees some 180 maritime and industry experts discuss five key themes deemed strategic for Singapore's maritime industry.
The key objective of the two-day conference is the sharing of expertise and ideas to facilitate the creation of a road map for Singapore's maritime research and development (R&D) priorities.
The major areas to be discussed are in Maritime Environment, Maritime Business and Finance, Maritime Economics and Logistics, Maritime Policy and Security, and Maritime Technology.
NTU's International Conference on Vision and Roadmap for R&D Priorities in Maritime Environment, Technology, Business, Policy and Security, is held in conjunction with the Singapore Maritime Week 2010.
"This conference seeks to tap the knowledge of some of the foremost experts in their fields, to chart the priorities in maritime research and development," says Dr Su Guaning, NTU President. "As Singapore continues working towards developing well-integrated business infrastructure, a conducive business environment and skilled manpower, we will increasingly rely on maritime research and development and advanced technology to support the continued growth of the Singapore Maritime Cluster."
NTU's International Maritime Conference is graced by Mr Teo Siong Seng, Managing Director of Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd, President of the Singapore Shipping Association, and Nominated Member of Parliament, as the Guest-of-Honour.
"I am pleased to note that the themes to be discussed are appropriate and timely for the development of Singapore maritime R&D," says Mr Teo. "I have no doubt that the discussion that follows will be charged and enthusiastic, channelled towards the highest degree of cooperation and stronger ties between NTU, research institutes, government agencies and the maritime industry."
Many luminaries from around the world will be speaking and contributing their views at this conference. His Excellency Holger Standertskjöld, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Singapore, and Mr Vaughan Pomeroy, Technical Director at Lloyd's Register of Shipping, will deliver keynote speeches at the conference.
