TSU will teach researchers to create new biosystems

March 16th, 2020 Elena Fritz

TSU has begun the new cross-disciplinary educational module Molecular Biotechnology, organized by the TSU Biological Institute (Department of Cytology and Genetics) and the StrAU Smart Materials and Technologies Institute. In this module, students, graduate students, and scientists will gain in-depth knowledge in biotechnology and synthetic biology. Lectures are given by leading scientists from Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State University (NSU), and Research Center Kurchatov Institute.

Synthetic biology is a new scientific area in biology that is engaged in the design and creation of biological systems with predetermined properties and functions, including those that have no analogues in nature.

The module will include 4 cycles of lectures by leading Russian scientists in bioengineering and synthetic biology from MSU, NSU, and the Kurchatov Institute on the latest advances in molecular biology and genetic engineering, including molecular cloning, evaluation of gene expression, and cell transformation. In addition to theoretical training, "Big Workshop on Bioengineering" and "Workshop on Synthetic Biology", which are necessary to obtain practical skills in these areas, will be held. The laboratories of the Department of Cytology and Genetics of Biological Institute will be the site of the workshops.

The module's first cycle of full-time lectures is by Peter Kamensky, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy in Life Sciences, Professor at the Department of Molecular Biology, Moscow State University.

For students, participation will help to create an individual learning path, choosing all disciplines or some of them. This type of education is additional education or training with certificates or certificates of advanced training issued for each program.

According to the organizers, the module Molecular Biotechnology is designed for the spring and autumn semesters, and each has two theoretical courses and a workshop. Students can choose any of the theoretical courses or attend all. There will be a separate selection for practical courses, as the number of people in the group is limited. Everyone may attend theoretical courses.
