IOF Medal of Achievement for outstanding scientific contributions awarded to John A. Kanis

The prestigious IOF Medal of Achievement was awarded today at the IOF WCO-ECCEO10 Congress in Florence to Professor Emeritus John A. Kanis.

The award honours an individual researcher who has significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis through original and outstanding scientific work. It underlines an important aspect of IOF's mission - to increase understanding and awareness of osteoporosis and to promote medical innovation, scientific excellence and improved care.

Professor Cyrus Cooper, Chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors stated, "It is truly fitting that the IOF Medal of Achievement is being presented to John A. Kanis, whose long-standing and distinguished career has significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis research. He has published widely on disorders of skeletal metabolism, including osteoporosis, Paget's disease of bone, hyperparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy and neoplasia. Above all, his outstanding contributions to guideline development, health technology assessment, epidemiology, health economics, and the creation of risk assessment algorithms, have provided valuable new insights and enabled the development of landmark diagnostic and management tools. "

Professor Kanis is a founding member and current President of the IOF as well as editor of Osteoporosis International. He is currently Emeritus Professor in Human Metabolism and the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases at the University of Sheffield. Author of more than 800 papers, chapters and books on bone disease and metabolism, Professor Kanis has received numerous awards and honours, including the ASBMR Bartter Award for Clinical Science, the John B. Johnson Award of the Paget Disease Foundation (USA), and a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.
