Model Solar Car Races Demonstrate Renewable Energy's Future
(PhysOrg.com) -- Middle school students from around the state will participate in the Junior Solar Sprint competitions on Saturday, May 22 sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy?s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The competitions give students the opportunity to show their engineering and design skills by building and racing high-performance model solar vehicles.
Fifty-four teams from 18 schools will be competing in the Junior Solar Sprint competitions. Teams use a solar cell and motor to design and build solar powered model vehicles. The cars will race on a 20-meter course.
NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
