SUSU graduate Ivan Volkov is known as the creator of an application for people with diabetes. For several years he has been supporting and improving his development. One of the last presentations took place within the framework of the international symposium on biomedical engineering, radio electronics and information technology.

The graduate of the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science Ivan Volkov has been an example for today's students for many years. While still studying at South Ural State University, Ivan created an application for people with diabetes. The development is constantly being improved, and therefore consumers and specialists are really interested in it.

In 2020, the young developer together with his scientific advisor, director of the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science Gleb Radchenko, took part in the Ural Symposium on Biomedical Engineering, Radio Electronics and Information Technologies. They published the report where they described the new application "DiaMeter". The developers explained how their program differs from analogs.

Unique features

There are many applications available for people with diabetes, but sometimes they don't have a full set of necessary functions: a diabetes diary, sugar and carbohydrate levels control, an insulin calculator. The SUSU graduate brought them all together in DiaMeter. He continues to improve the development to make it as useful as possible.

"Our latest innovation is the bread unit calculator, which can be updated by the application users themselves. At the moment, there are already 6200 products in the database. We also updated the design, now you can enter data on diabetes therapy faster. The statistics screen shows not only the dynamics of the sugar level but also the specific amount of carbohydrates and insulin for a certain day or the average for each week or month," Ivan Volkov said.

The importance of these features is appreciated by users. Diabetes is an incurable disease, so you need to monitor its progress and follow the doctors' recommendations. DiaMeter helps to turn this process into a simple routine.

"The app has everything from calculating your insulin dose to analyzing average sugar values. You can track all the parameters and draw conclusions about your therapy, make adjustments. Even children quickly master all the functions, and the bread unit calculator is especially useful for them. We always recommend "DiaMeter" to people who have been diagnosed with diabetes, because it takes into account the entire life of the patients. On behalf of the parents, whose children have diabetes, and on behalf of the adults with such a diagnosis, I express my gratitude to the developers," the vice president of the Russian Diabetes Association Irina Isakova said.

The young scientist has a lot of ideas for improving the application. He hopes that someday users will receive prediction of sugar levels and search for anomalies in diabetes therapy. The closest update is the English translation. There are many more features that can be added to the app, but it's more important to understand which ones will really make life with diabetes easier for users.

"Diabetes is a disease that stays with a person for life. Keeping a diary allows you to know the situation better and understand whether there are problems in the current diabetes therapy and, most importantly, in what aspects. At the moment, the application is the fastest and most convenient way of control," Ivan Volkov added.

Career start in South Ural

Having started this socially significant application, the developer moved on to commercial orders, and now the SUSU graduate has his own company, Meteor-IT. They work on websites and mobile applications, and large organizations, such as Chelyabinvestbank, Gazprom, Geo Pro are among their customers.

Ivan Volkov is confident that he achieved success because he studied at SUSU. It was at the university where he became interested in creating applications, and also found many acquaintances who invited him to participate in interesting projects.

The graduate advised current students not to be afraid to try themselves in different spheres of life, because every result, even an unsuccessful one, is a great experience.
