The Department of Computational Mechanics of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of SUSU implements project-based, subject-oriented teaching of students in cooperation with the federal state unitary enterprise "Russian Federal Nuclear Center—All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics named after Academician E.I. Zababakhin ". Together with RFNC specialists, students and postgraduates develop methods for mathematical modeling of the behavior of environments under dynamic loads, create modern materials with specified properties, and also work on software for a faster and more accurate solution of the assigned tasks.

Contribution to Scientific and Technological Development of the Country

The Russian Federal Nuclear Center is one of the key enterprises of Rosatom State Corporation, ensuring the sovereignty and security of the Russian Federation. The project "Mathematical modeling of fast processes in multicomponent heterogeneous media" aims at developing methods for physical and mathematical modeling of the behavior of continuous media under dynamic loads. This is a difficult task, work is going in several directions: the creation of a special software package for more accurate calculations, work on obtaining modern structural and energy-intensive materials with specified mechanical and thermodynamic properties, and a comprehensive assessment of the safe behavior of structures under shock-wave loads. All this requires the use of modern means of physical and mathematical modeling, including carrying out calculations on modern computers and complexes.

"The existing physical and mathematical models of fast processes with phase and chemical transformations are constantly being supplemented and complicated. This is due to the development of the capabilities of both the experimental base and the software implementation of models on modern computers. The problem is that existing software packages are either highly specialized or commercial. Almost all of them were developed abroad. Also, there is a lack of information about the accuracy and reliability of the numerical methods used" Doctor of Science, Professor Yuri Kovalev says.

Scientists say that the development of a software package for modeling a wide class of problems in continuum mechanics is an urgent problem. The combination of physical and mathematical modeling in the analysis of the properties of structural and energy-intensive materials will make a significant contribution to the implementation of the Strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation. This strategy provides for the transition to advanced digital technologies, new materials and design methods, the creation of systems for processing large amounts of data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

The results of joint research are presented at Russian and international conferences: XI All-Russian Congress on Fundamental Problems of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, XV All-Russian Symposium on Combustion and Explosion, All-Russian Conference "Scientific Session of National Research Nuclear University MEPhI-2019 in the direction of "Innovative Nuclear Technologies " and several publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science; recent papers are Equations of State to Describe Isothermal Compression of Certain Molecular Nitro Compound Crystals in the Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics, an article Equation of State of TATB Based on Static and Dynamic Experiments in Combustion, Explosion and Shock Waves.
