2010 International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases

Journalists are invited to attend and cover the 2010 International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases (ICEID), to be held July 11-14, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta, Georgia. The meeting is being organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Society for Microbiology, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, the Association of Public Health Laboratories and the World Health Organization.

The International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases was first convened in 1998; ICEID 2010 marks its seventh occurrence. The conference brings together public health professionals to encourage the exchange of scientific and public health information on global emerging infectious disease issues. The program will include plenary and panel sessions with invited speakers as well as oral and poster presentations on emerging infections.

Major subjects to be covered include:

  • Pandemic flu H1N1: lessons learned, prevention and future treatment
  • One Health and the human/animal/environmental interface and the role of the global animal trade
  • Vaccines: the new, the old and striving for disease eradication in a constantly changing world
  • Emerging foodborne issues: outbreaks, causes and risks
  • Antimicrobial resistance and community control efforts
  • Climate change, ecology and disease emergence
  • Chronic infections and cancer

The conference will begin with opening keynote addresses by CDC Director Thomas Frieden, Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and Keiji Fukuda, Special Advisor to the World Health Organization at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 11 and conclude at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14.

Comprehensive media facilities will be available for the ICEID. The press center will be located in the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Programs, abstracts, news releases and information about daily press activities will be available. A limited number of complimentary press registrations will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
