Genetics Society of America to host 2010 Yeast Genetics & Molecular Biology Meeting
The Genetics Society of America (GSA) will be hosting the 2010 Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting, from July 27-August 1, 2010, at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. This biennial meeting brings together investigators studying various aspects of eukaryotic biology in yeast. The Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting is the most important scientific meeting for yeast biologists.
Program highlights for the 2010 Yeast Genetics Meeting include a lecture by Nobel Laureate (2009) Jack Szostak, and a special symposium featuring Nobel Laureates (2001) Paul Nurse and Lee Hartwell , and Marc Garneau (Canadian astronaut and Member of Parliament) that will address how scientific research and new discoveries impact - and are impacted by - society, policy, and funding issues. In addition, this year's meeting will feature special lectures and symposia, a series of presentations from this year's group of distinguished award winners, several workshop sessions on topics of interest, as well as platform and poster sessions based on abstracts.

Presenters: Paul Nurse, 2001 Nobel Laureate and President, Rockefeller University, New York City; Leland Hartwell, 2001 Nobel Laureate and Director, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle; and, Marc Garneau, Canadian astronaut and Member of Parliament.
This special presentation by speakers Nurse, Hartwell, and Garneau will address how scientific research and new discoveries impact - and are impacted by - society, policy, and funding issues.
Special Lecture: "DNA Ends: Just the Beginning" - Saturday, July 31
Presenter: Jack Szostak, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
Szostak, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009 for his work on telomere structure and function, will present a special lecture on his research entitled, "DNA Ends: Just the Beginning."
Lifetime Achievement Award Presentation - Friday, July 30

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors scientists that have demonstrated a lifetime of extraordinary contributions to the yeast genetics field, and outstanding community service.

The Winge-Lindegren Address is presented by scientists whose significant contributions and unique perspectives have provided exceptional leadership in the field.
Lee Hartwell Lecture - Wednesday, July 28
Presenter: Randy Schekman, University of California, Berkeley
Named in honor of Nobel Laureate Lee Hartwell, this award and lecture is presented by the scientist whose research on yeast genetics has made the most significant impact in the broader areas of biology.
Ira Herskowitz Award Presentation - Tuesday, July 27
Recipient/Presenter: Brenda Andrews, University of Toronto
This award is presented to younger scientists whose cutting edge research and technological innovation have made the most significant impact on the field in the last 20 years.
