Anxiety affects 60% of nurses working in closed institutions such as prisons and nursing homes, who are also up to 3.4 times more likely to suffer from these symptoms than their nursing colleagues, according to the conclusions of the national study carried out in ten autonomous communities by the IMPLICA Research Group (The Involvement of Nursing in Care) of the Universitat Jaume I of Castelló.

Specifically, 90 professionals from ten autonomous regions (Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, La Rioja, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community) took part in the study. Eighty percent were women and the average age was 45.4. Fifty-five percent worked in prisons. The results showed that 60% of the sample had different levels of anxiety (27% mild; 11% moderate and 62% severe) and that women were up to 3.4 times more likely to suffer from anxiety than men.

The research was presented in poster format during the II National Multidisciplinary COVID-19 Congress held virtually during the first fortnight of April. This meeting was organized this year by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), backed by more than 82 Spanish scientific societies, and it served to exchange experiences and knowledge with the common goal of tackling the pandemic.
