Cell symposia meeting, Influenza: Translating basic insights, to be held Dec. 2-4, 2010
To provide authors additional time to complete their research, the deadline to submit abstracts is now extended until July 31 for the Cell Symposia meeting, Influenza: Translating basic insights, to be held December 2-4 at the Washington Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC.
Abstracts are invited for presentation at the symposium on the following five topics: "Virus biology," "Pandemics, pathogenesis and disease," "Immune response and evasion," "Vaccines," and "Diagnostics and therapeutics."

Influenza: Translating basic insights is one in a series of Cell Symposia sponsored by Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier. The meeting aims to bring basic scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists and applied biotechnology and pharmaceutical researchers together to build a translational bridge between basic influenza research and the development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics for the flu.
Given the recent influenza pandemic, the last 12 months have seen a flurry of activity in the area of flu research. New insights are being gained about the biology of the virus, the host immune response, and the ability of the virus to overcome species barriers and host-immune defenses. The broader goal of influenza research is to extrapolate these basic insights for better control of disease, and to develop better vaccines and anti-viral therapeutics.
Influenza: Translating basic insights aims to foster interactions among a broad group of scientists studying the influenza virus from multiple perspectives including: the virus itself, the host response to viral infection, the clinical manifestations of pandemic and seasonal influenza, as well as those scientists actively working to develop better vaccines and therapeutics in an industrial setting.
The meeting has been planned by Cell Press journal editors Lakshmi Goyal, Editor of the meeting's lead journal sponsor, Cell Host and Microbe, and Julie Stacey, Senior Editor of Immunity.
