As part of the work of the Ural Interregional Research and Education Center "Advanced Production Technologies and Materials", large interdisciplinary projects are being implemented, the purpose of which is to improve living conditions in the region. Scientists from South Ural State University are creating the Ecomonitor software package to track the spread of pollutants in the atmospheric air. Thus, a tool for effective monitoring of atmospheric emissions will appear.

Monitoring Emissions with the Internet of Things

Associate Professor, Ph.D. in Economics Dmitry Drozin and Associate Professor, Ph.D. in Mathematics Sergey Elsakov are working on a mathematical model for the spread of pollutants in the air. Existing methods for controlling air pollution do not meet the needs of the present. Trends in the active implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in production systems, social institutions, and the domestic sphere allow us to take a fresh look at solving environmental problems. The creation of mathematical models and methods for calculating the spread of pollutants in the atmosphere is relevant and timely. The economic activity of industrial enterprises is associated with the risk of causing harm to the environment. Currently, most enterprises lack operational analysis systems to manage their environmental risks. There are no sensor systems at the sources of emissions and in the zones of influence. The proposed Ecomonitor complex will solve this problem by creating: a monitoring and analysis system that will make it possible to make a decision online and prevent negative consequences. "Ecomonitor" is aimed at practical application and is designed to solve real production problems.

"The complex of environmental monitoring and forecasting "Ecomonitor" makes it possible to visualize the current situation, predict the environmental situation, and carry out automated analysis of data on emissions. The real-time visualization to the geographic map of the area demonstrates the simulated and predicted surface concentrations of pollutants," says project manager Dmitry Drozin.

The Ecomonitor complex allows receiving information from automatic emission control systems from fixed sources and from operators through manual input. The purpose of the complex is to provide comprehensive information about the environmental situation and its changes in a convenient way, thus the enterprise will be able to manage its negative impact without reducing production. Several mathematical models allow solving such problems—the chemical transport model, CalPuff, TARM, and others.

The Ecomonitor complex based on a well-known, already tested mathematical model allows obtaining reliable results. The modification of the model made it possible to make real-time decisions. The results of the work were published in the journal Vestnik SUSU.

"In our work, we proposed a SUSUPLUME model for the dispersion of pollutants in the atmospheric air. It describes the dynamics of dispersion, taking into account various factors: the meteorological situation and the pollution source. We supplemented the equations of the classical model with the equations of motion of the center of mass of a single ejection. The numerical study showed that in stationary weather conditions, the presented model is qualitatively consistent with the methodology for calculating MRR-2017 dispersions approved in Russia," explains Ph.D. Sergey Elsakov, a member of the development team.

Project partners: Office of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources Management in the Chelyabinsk Region (Rosprirodnadzor), a manufacturing company of automated systems and measuring instruments LLC Emerson, a factory for the production of insulation materials LLC Zavod TECHNO.

South Ural State University (SUSU) is a university of digital transformations, where innovative research is carried out in most priority areas of science and technology development. Following the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation, the university focuses on the development of large scientific interdisciplinary projects in the field of the digital industry, materials science, and ecology. In 2021, SUSU won the competition under the Priority 2030 program. The university performs the functions of the regional project office of the Ural Interregional Scientific and Educational Center.
