Conference Circular@WUR: Living within planetary boundaries
Circular@WUR provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of current knowledge about a circular, bio-based society.
As part of the upcoming Circular@WUR conference, the BioMonitor project will organize a session on April 13, 2022 focused on where the EU bioeconomy currently stands. Our four speakers will present their insights based on their work within the project.
The presentation by Robert M'Barek (Joint Research Centre, European Commission) will give an overview of how the EU bioeconomy strategy is embedded into the EU's new growth strategy, the Green Deal. It will describe how the bioeconomy has evolved over the last years in the EU from a socio-economic perspective. The importance of the identification of trade-offs and synergies in biomass supply and use will be illustrated. Finally, the main questions related to bioeconomy monitoring and analysis will be presented.
Hans Verkerk (European Forest Institute) will provide a comprehensive overview of existing models that can be used to analyze the development of the bioeconomy. His presentation will highlight the need for desired improvements and extensions to the existing bioeconomy modelling capacity. He will briefly introduce the BioMonitor Model Toolbox and provide an example of improvements in sectoral modelling of wood-based products.
Myrna van Leeuwen (Wageningen Economic Research) will introduce a new tool, the BioMat model, to enable a market analysis of innovative bio-based product value chains in the EU and its Member States. An overview of the key characteristics of the model will be provided as well as the bioeconomy-related questions the novel model can address.
Finally, based on the empirical evidence gathered in the BioMonitor project, Gianmaria Tassinari (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) will present common challenges and opportunities in monitoring bioeconomy developments in Europe. Seven case studies dealing with different bioeconomy branches will jointly be analyzed and discussed to suggest improvements in data collection methods and modelling frameworks.
The Circular@WUR conference is hosted as a normal physical conference on Wageningen Campus. For those for whom it is not possible to attend live, the possibility is offered to follow the conference online. The entire conference will be broadcast via live stream.
