'Conference on Island Sustainability' for Guam and Micronesia

The Conference goals are to:

  • Provide a forum for discussion on key issues pertaining to environmental, economic and social sustainability Develop conceptual and practical models of sustainability that are applicable to small island societies such as Guam and the rest of the Micronesian Region.
  • Focus specifically on renewable and alternative energy sources as a major key to island sustainability in the 21st century. Small islands in the Pacific have the opportunity to use, adapt and develop new technologies that will reduce dependence and exponentially increase sustainability.
  • Provide the opportunity for exchanging ideas, techniques and concerns with a focus on implementable solutions that contribute simultaneously to environmental and economic sustainability.

The two-day conference includes three tracks:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Energy

Each session will be one hour. Poster sessions and presentation tables will also be available for commercial and educational exhibits.

Plenary speaker for the two-day conference is Dr. Debra Rowe, President of the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development. The U.S. Partnership convenes members of the business, education, communities, and government and faith sectors of the U.S. and catalyzes sustainability initiatives.

Dr. Rowe is also National Co-coordinator of the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium, Founder of the Disciplinary Associations' Network for Sustainability and Senior Advisor to the Association of Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

She helps higher education associations and institutions integrate sustainability into mission, curricula, professional development, research, student life, purchasing and investments, facilities and operations, and community partnerships.

Dr. Rowe has also been a professor of energy management, renewable energy technology and psychology for over 28 years. Dr. Rowe created online sustainability related courses and degrees with funds from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Rowe is often a keynote speaker at national and international education conference and is the author or editor of numerous publications on the integration of sustainability into education.

Dr. Rowe graduated with a B.A. from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Business, M.A. in Psychology and M.B.A. in Business from the University of Michigan.
