A visit from the European Commission President von der Leyen

October 19th, 2022

On Monday 10th October, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen visited Estonia for the launch of the implementation of the Estonian just transition plan in Narva.

During her one-day visit to Estonia, President Ursula von der Leyen together with Estonia's prime minister Kaja Kallas and minister of public administration Riina Solman visited the Estonian cities of Tallinn and Narva. While in Narva, the guests also went to Kreenholm Manufactory, founded by Ursula von der Leyen's great grandfather, baron Ludwig von Knoop.

Krenholm is a post-industrial district in the city of Narva, located on an island in the homonymous river. The ex- textile manufacturing company, founded in mid-19th Century, grew under the Soviet regime but didn't survive the collapse of the Soviet Union. The district of Kreenholm is now part of Narva's heritage and one of the pilot sites of the TExTOUR project, aiming to foster sustainable tourism in remote areas.

"It was wonderful to visit Kreenholm, the fairy tales of my childhood come from there." Said the President von der Leyen.
