New hybrid microgrid to be tried and tested in Spain

November 21st, 2022

As part of a European research project, Spain's Centre for Energy and Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT) has published a paper explaining a new case study for hybrid microgrids

The case study is one of two within the TIGON project which is designing and testing a set of software and hardware components for the widespread roll-out of AC-DC microgrids. These include a solid-state transformer, silicon carbide (SiC) medium voltage DC/DC power converters, and energy management system and wide area monitoring protection and control (WAMPAC).

The paper—Hybrid AC/DC architecture in the CE.D.E.R.-CIEMAT microgrid: demonstration of the TIGON project—presents CIEMAT's Centre for the Development of Renewable Energy (CE.D.E.R) where the hybrid architecture microgrid is located. It then explains the system set up to monitor the various pieces of equipment. Finally it describes the work planned for the rest of the project.

The four-year project will analyse the replication potential at two other sites—in Bulgaria and Finland—acting as niche markets for these microgrids.

Background

TIGON is funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme and has a budget of roughly €7m. It forms part of the EU's broader policy of building a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
