NASA?s Vertical Motion Simulator Facility Celebrates 30 Years

News media are invited Aug. 20, 2010 to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Vertical Motion Simulator, or VMS, a facility NASA uses to mimic a variety of aircraft and spacecraft and to train astronauts to land the space shuttle.

The VMS has been used for research involving areas such as space vehicles, rotorcraft, tilt rotors, six fixed-wing aircraft for military and commercial applications, trains, ground vehicles and airships. Engineers customize the facility to simulate any aerospace vehicle, whether existing or in the design stage.

Who: Speakers at the event include NASA’s Ames Center Director S. Pete Worden, Mayor of Mountain View Ronit Bryant, former NASA Deputy Administrator Hans Mark, and an astronaut.

What: A celebration of the 30-year anniversary of the VMS. Tours of the VMS will be available but space is limited. Please contact Karen Jenvey at karen.jenvey@nasa.gov, 650-604-4034, or 650-996-1391 to reserve a space.

When: 9 a.m. Friday Aug. 20 for tours of the VMS; 1-5 p.m Aug. 21 for program and speakers highlighting the 30 years of the VMS.

Where: Tours will be given in the Vertical Motion Simulator building. Program and speaker highlights will be in the Ames Conference Center Bldg. 3.
